It is a sheet of fibres laid in one direction or irregularly, bonded by friction or by mechanical, chemical or thermal cohesion. Its properties adapt to the intended use — permeable or impermeable as required — and it is by nature breathable, water-repellent, absorbent, protective and sterilisable: qualities that are essential for safety in the operating theatre.
